The first female town planner in Nigeria Tpl. Catherine Kehinde George, FNITP, RTP, recently in Lagos was honoured as the Life Patroness of the newly inaugurated Association of Women Town Planners in Nigeria (AWTPN), during the investiture ceremony of the first National Chairman of the association Tpl. Mrs. Bello Risikat Bukola, FNITP. The association came to be during the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) National Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in 2021.
In all ramifications Tpl. Mrs. George deserves the recognition and the status as given by the association going by the following milestones and contributions of this great woman of substance to the town planning profession in particular and the built environment generally in Nigeria.
Tpl. Mrs. C. Kehinde George is the first female Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) 1987, and the first female African Fellow of the Royal Town Planning Institute of Britain (RTPI) 1990. The pioneer female Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Planning Authority (1998 – 1999), and the first female Chairman of Lagos State Chapter of NITP (1998 – 2000).
She was elected Member of the National Executive Council of NITP, 1987 – 1988, and 1990 – 1992; Vice – Chairperson Yaba College of Technology Chapter of Women in Technical Education (WITED) 1996 – 2000; The Pioneer Chairman of Lagos State Urban Forum for Slum Upgrading (Lagos Metropolitan Development Project) 2001-2002; She was a member NITP/Town Planners Registration Council (TOPREC) Examination Board (1998– 2000).
Tpl. Mrs. C.K. George also lectured on the Masters Programme in Urban and Regional Planning at Lagos State University, 2011 to 2013. She is a Member of the Building Collapse Prevention Guild 2012 to date.
She is a recipient of several honours and awards, including:- “Distinguished Professional Award” by Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Nigeria, March 2, 2011. She was inducted into the prestigious Nigeria’s Construction Industry Hall of Fame by Construction and Engineering Digest (CED) Magazine Forum at Abuja, July 28, 2011, amongst other notable awards and recognitions.
She has authored so many professional and non professional books, some of them are; Basic Principles and Methods of Urban and Regional Planning, 1st Edition 1999, 2nd Edition 2002, 3rd Edition 2007, and the 4th Edition 2015.
