The Governor spoke at the Luncheon/Merit Award held in commemoration of the centenary celebration of the International Day of Cooperatives in Ogba saying, “As a result of consistent commitment to its fundamental philosophy, cooperative movements have become a veritable tool in the fight against poverty and unemployment while also encouraging social integration”.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Folashade Raji, Sanwo-Olu noted that cooperative movements globally promote the spirit of self-reliance and encourage citizens to take responsibility for their economic, social and environmental prosperity.
Speaking on the theme of the event: “Cooperatives Build a Better World”, the Governor observed that it focuses on charting the course for an innovative and sustainable business ecosystem which provides the tools and inputs to the private sector, public authority and consumers developing new businesses.
In her contribution, the Honourable Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Dr. (Mrs.) Lola Akande said the International Day of Cooperatives (IDC) is an occasion to educate the public on issues of concern, mobilise political will and resources to address global problems, and celebrate the achievements of humanity.
Pointing out that the annual celebration strengthens and extends partnerships between the International Cooperative Movement and other outfits of social development, Mrs. Akande explained that the Luncheon/Merit Award was convened to recognise cooperators and cooperatives who have served their respective societies and communities diligently and conscientiously.
She noted that this year’s theme aligned with the fourth pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S Development Agenda, “Making Lagos State A 21st Century Economy”, to encourage local entrepreneurship and boost locally-made goods.
The Commissioner asserted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration has continued to create enabling environments through financial reforms, affordable housing, food security, empowerment and social-economic interventions to promote prosperity in the State.
“The celebration is a testimony to the determination of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration to support every genuine effort and move that could promote the capability of our people in achieving economic and financial prosperity for all and sundry”, Dr. Akande stated.
