Professor Danladi Slim Matawal was born 30th October, 1955 in Bokkos town, Plateau State of Nigeria. He is currently the Directtor-General/Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Building & Road Research Institute (NBRRI), of the Federal Ministry of Science & Technology, Abuja, a position he assumed on 1st March, 2011.
Professor Matawal attended NA Primary School, Bokkos (1963 – 1968), Government College, Keffi 91969 – 1973) and graduated with a first class honours Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree in Civil Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria – Nigeria in 1978. He holds the Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Civil Engineering and Diploma of the Imperial College (DIC) of the University of London in 1981. His Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) was obtained in 1992 in Civil Engineering.
He is a Fellow of Nigerian Society of Engineers, Fellow of the Academy of Engineering of Nigeria, Member, Nigerian Institute of Management, Registered Engineer on the Roll of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, Member of the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria.
Professor Matawal have served as the Former Consultant Civil Engineer in the Design and Supervision of numerous Civil, Structural, Water Supply and Highway projects since 1978, Director of Public Works in a Polytechnic (1983 – 1987), Head of Department of Civil Engineering in the University (1991 – 1993) and 2004 – 2008), Director of Centre for Distance Learning of a University (1996 – 2002), Dean of Engineering of a University (2004 – 2008), Dean of Post-Graduate School of a University (2008 – 2011).
He was first appointed as Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Building & Road Research Institute (NBRR) 2011 and because of his over-whelming contribution to the institute, he was re-appointed as Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of NBRRI on 1st March 2015.
He was appointed to the chair of Professor of Civil Engineering on 1st October, 1999 and has been Visiting Professor and/or External Examiner to many Universities.
He is Chairman or Member of over 36 Quality Assurance Accreditation panels to Universities in Nigeria; 2006 Raw Materials Award by the RMRDC, Member UNESCO – Nigeria TVE Committee, Member Board of Directors of PIDA, Transition to Civil Rule Committee Member, Visitation/Administrative Panel Member to a Polytechnic, Member of Presidential Monitoring Group (FMWWR), and Member ETF-TAG.
Professor Matawal have published 1 textbook, over 50 journal and published proceedings, 10 public lectures, over 20 technical reports and monographs, 19 seminar/conference papers and 8 articles on professional issues.
His research interest is primarily in areas of alternative building materials for affordable housing, water supply, timber as well as civil engineering materials especially Cements and Pozzolans and difficult soil identification and improvement techniques. Currently working on developing national codes and specifications for the Nigerian Road sector and piloting research to eliminate road pavement failure and building collapse in Nigeria.
He has done Post-Graduate supervision for PGD, M.Eng and Ph.D where no fewer than 50 students have graduated in Civil Engineering or Building Construction Technology disciplines. M.Eng or M.Sc theses have been supervised on such topics as ‘Effects of high temperatures fire on reinforced concrete products’ using Jos main market as case study, common reasons for collapse of water tanks in Nigeria, Investigation into the micro-characteristics of cement brands in Nigeria, Engineering properties of common timbers in use in Northern Eastern Nigeria, the groundwater potentials of Bokkos town and environs, application of neural network artificial intelligence for Dadin Kowa Dam monitoring, use of Artificial Neural Network (ANN), for predicting the properties of concrete etc.
Professor Matawal obtained numerous Honours, Distinctions and Recognitions and Chairman of University Civil Engineering Board of Examiners, Chairman of University Faculty of Engineering and University Post-Graduate Boards, Member of University Senate etc. He is a Fellow, Nigerian Academy of Engineering (FAEng.) 2013, Fellow of African Engineering Education Association (FAEEA) 2013. Fellow, Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (FNICE), 2015, He was also inducted into the Nigerian Construction Industry Hall of Fame in 2013, organized by the famous construction industry publication in Nigeria Construction and Engineering Digest (CED) Magazine.
